John Muir said Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in where nature may heal and give strength to body and soul. I agree. The more desperate and damaged the world becomes – the worse the daily news is – the more I feel the need for the hills. Or mountains, in this case Posets, second highest in the Pyrenees and one of the most beautiful.
I took two days to climb Posets, hitching from Bensaque where I’d rested to the start of the climb, which was difficult to find. No signpost, and I went up a tortuous track when there was a road the other side of a river. It was a pointless part of the route best completed quickly. Had I been on the road I would have tried to hitch.
Higher up you go through a forest and reach a refuge. I stayed there for the night. The next day I climbed up a hillside and reached the steep Posets ridge. This is where the fun really starts. It’s a magnificent mountain.
