On one side we find forces of mechanisation, power and control, and on the other side the impulse towards creativity and a free life. This is partly ideological where our thoughts are circumscribed and controlled, and partly physical where we are trapped in over crowded cities. In both respects it concerns space – the freedom to move where and as we wish. The Peak District, not far from here at Bradwell Edge, was the site of a struggle for space with the famous Mass Protest. It was characteristically British, with ordinary people battling wealthy landowners for the right to roam the hills: like insisting on the rules of cricket.
