My connections with nature started in childhood. We had a garden with three ponds, fruit trees, a vegetable patch, and a greenhouse where I grew cacti. My school was located next to agricultural fields. We went for walks across those fields and beyond. In the Lake District, I’ve stayed in working farm houses where on one occasion they were bringing in the hay on a 10 o’clock summer evening. My car was parked in their tractor yard. Although we mostly live in big cities I think the land is part of the British soul. Or perhaps this is fanciful, and I’m just sick of cities and what you find in them.
