Wales is a rough and sometimes bleak place compared to the painterly beauty of the Lake District and Scotland. It seems dismal slate and harsh rock is never far away compared to the soft green hillsides which are common elsewhere. As such, a shot like this evokes the particular quality of the Welsh mountains. There are large green parts of Wales – very green – but they are south of Snowdonia. My favourite places, such as the Beddgelert and Dolweddylan areas, are very wooded and green and beautiful but – as I say – the slate is never far away.
