This is the most concentrated shot I have so far to illustrate my theme. The flowers are lovely and if you suspend your subjective feeling about ugly works – which is what this is at Clayton – you can feel the background is like attractive sculpture. I’m playing with perceptions, landscape, environment, habitat, with wild flowers as the overriding theme. That’s Ragwort and Rosebay Willowherb. The names are incantatory, suggestive, pleasant. I sometimes imagine characters in a novel with wild flower names. Germander Speedwell perhaps, who wears tweed, brogues, and a Barbour. He’s very fond of Rosebay Willowherb who likes floral dresses she inherited from her mother and a cold gin with her four o’clock tea.
