South of Blaenau Ffestiniog there are tantalising views to nearby hills. The area is appallingly scarred with slate mines cutting into the slopes and enormous piles of depressing unwanted slate. If it weren’t there this would be an exceptional part of Snowdonia. I walked those hills in 2013. I avert my eyes and pretend the scars don’t exist, but they do. It’s an unpleasant feeling like war zone damage full of pain and horror. I’ve stopped here several times to photograph these views.
