The climb to Helvellyn is surprisingly short if you use Swrirral Edge and Striding edge which you see below. You could do it quite easily in four hours. I don’t like descending Swirral Edge and prefer to extend the day by continuing to Sheffield Pike. You don’t see many people there. The same applies to Catsycam.
The hamlet of Glenridding below is a place I’m very familiar with. The shops, the people in the shops, a few of the guest houses and farm houses where I’ve stayed.
My favourite now is the camp site the other side of Ullswater. The location beside the lake is exceptionally good. On this trip I was gazing up to Helvellyn – here – for two days from my tent. I wasn’t sure where to go. The other option was down the valley and climb Red Screes.
