I crossed this snowfield wearing sandals. The other side was a granite area where it was difficult to find the route. I learned a vital navigation technique. Not from a book, not from anyone else, but from being here. Look ahead and sight your way to where you must go. If the cloud thickens – and it did – all you need is 50 metres or so visibility and a general orientation with a compass.
