Le Vignemale is a famous and moody mountain. The first time I came here was along the High Level Route from Refuge Wallon. I was looking forward to it but didn’t see much because of thick cloud.

This time was better. I saw the magnificent soaring wall and its glacier filled crags, and the changing effects of weather. A little cloud, as you see here, makes for a good photograph.

It’s a cold place below Vignemale and I don’t like it much for camping. The ground is hard and rocky. In the morning however you wake to this.
