The Ton Joosten high level route takes you along this skyline ridge. It would be a great walking experience. But it’s not a proper path and it’s difficult to navigate. I chatted and consulted with two chaps over the other side, one of them local, who’d tried the route and got lost. They pointed me to a short cut avoiding the ridge.

I then got lost myself because I was walking with a map only, with no guide book instructions. This proved very difficult. I didn’t have enough information which meant an element of guess work, and I didn’t realise this was happening. Conclusion: walk without a guide book in an area like this and you need a larger scale map than the 1:50,000 I was using. GPS would no doubt be effective but I didn’t have it. I don’t have a GPS device.
