In his book Ton Joosten describes this small lake as a good place for a bivouac. It certainly is. I got here about 4 pm and sunbathed, read, ambled, took photographs and ate. There were masses of tadpoles, a few frogs, lots of grasshoppers, dragonflies, and I saw a twelve inch adder across the other side of the lake.

In the night there was a disturbance under my ground sheet. I whacked around trying to scare the thing away and thought perhaps it was a rat. In the morning I noticed a little burrow near my tent just above the water so I think my night visitor was maybe a water vole. Probably on a routine foray for food along a familiar track thinking what’s going on? – this shouldn’t be here.
