I’ve climbed Helvellyn at least ten times. If you ascend by Striding Edge as here and descend down Swirral Edge, it’s a quick walk of four or five hours. Or you can extend the trip further and take in Sheffield Pike, or go the other way along the plateau and come down Grizedale. Either option adds about two or perhaps three hours if you linger with your camera. This time I went down Grizedale which gives you the greatest length of the plateau to enjoy, with views to distant Windermere. The peak across the tarn is Catsycam. Most people ignore it but it’s worth climbing at least once. The downward slope (on the right) is very steep.
