Converting a photograph to black and white changes it’s aesthetic. This in turn means you have to re-evaluate it in terms of its tones, contrast, and shape. I sometimes crop a picture into a more square format as I do this, when colour areas don’t translate into an interesting part of the image. The first pares back the picture to black, white, and intermediary grey. The second cuts it back again to a smaller composition.
