The first time I walked this ridge I fought gale force winds howling down from Honistor. There was no peace until I started to descend to Scarth Gap. This time the calendar said spring but the conditions said winter. It was a memorable and enjoyable walk, a demarcation between a dismal long winter and the beginning of a new walking year. I do walk in winter, but only in a restricted way making use of camp sites rather than the hills, or an occasional night at a guest house if I have the money.
