Many years ago I looked forward to winter not because I preferred it to summer but because it had the promise of snow which could nonetheless be enjoyed. I no longer feel that way. Snow is just hard work. Only a few weeks ago did I finally relax, convinced the dreadful extended winter had finally stopped. I felt traumatised by it. There was more snow in Scotland and the Lake District last week and apparently in Belgium too. All of northern Europe has been affected by this. It means you never stop fighting; you feel an adversarial relationship with the environment. Can I come out, like a daffodil or tulip, or will I get cut down again by cold?
