This is a lovely place coming down the track called Lad Hows, with Crummock Water opening before you overlooked by Melbreak. Melbreak is on the edge of this area behind which you have Loweswater and relatively flat terrain. The Buttermere valley is quiet compared to nearby Borrowdale, reached by driving up to Honistor beside Fleetwith Pike. It’s even quieter if you walk Melbreak and beyond and the views from this shapely hill are very rewarding. To the right, it’s a steep heathery climb, then the plateau is flat, and you finish with a gentle descent back to the lake. The last time I did it I was badly sunburnt and had to wear cold weather gloves to shield my hands.
