When I first started coming here many years ago, I stayed at a Patterdale bed and breakfast house below these slopes. She was called Mrs Beatty, made and sold lovely orange marmalade, and charged £14 a night. One thing I dislike about the Lake District is how expensive it is. These days about thirty five pounds is the starting point for accommodation. This is partly why I now camp, alongside the fact that I prefer it. There’s a lovely camp site on the far side of Ullswater, which is where I stayed for this trip.
