Place Fell rises above Ullswater and I’ve noticed, several times, these slopes catch a lovely evening light when most of the landscape is in sunset shadow. I’d never walked this path before and didn’t know it was here. As I descended a group of youths were coming down over nearby rough ground. I’ve done it myself. One occasion was even worse when I attempted some spontaneous climbing on a crumbly rock face at Walla Crag above Derwent Water. I thought it would be a good route but it was crazy. It wasn’t a climbing area. Now I think about it, the same happened on a rock face below Cnicht in Wales where I almost got stuck. I like these sombre, muted colours.
