My favourite photographic light. Dark skies with bright shafts or fleeting bands of illumination. There’s an expression ‘chasing the light’ and on occasion I do it literally: run across the mountains to catch a transitory effect. I know what I want in terms of composition and shape and how it changes with camera view. Here for example I liked the dark, light, dark, curves of the descending hills and the clouds above. Changing light makes it more complex. So does running around without breaking an ankle. You see Styhead Tarn centre left, Derwent Water and Borrowdale below the illumined cloud, Skiddaw and Blencathra on the skyline.
