Ocasionally you find a mountain which is sufficiently distinct you might spend days wandering around photographing from every direction. Pic du Midi d’Ossau is such a mountain. When I was here in 2009 I photographed it in various ways with foreground interest, surrounding features, and from this view here. It’s the first sight of the area you have as you cross Col de Moines from Spain into France. In some respects it’s the best shot of Pic du Midi d’Ossau because it aims at the heart of it: this beautiful peak rising like a sculpture out of a vast but friendly area. Refuge Ayous is about an hour from here and Refuge Pombie is the other side of Midi dOssau. The traditional High Level Route suggests you head for Pombie at this point. It’s far better to walk to Ayous and spend a night there to enjoy this area.
