The reddish slope on the right was the photographic highlight of this walk. Ten minutes from here it was a very fine sight. The subtle colours contrasted beautifully against the snow and blue skies. The effect depended on the light, and I was lucky. It was possibly the best mountain light I’ve ever seen. A slight pinkish hue as the sun began to set, and completely clear. The quality of light is an important part of winter mountain photography. Other times of year, summer especially, the light is usually hazy.
