I decided not to climb Monte d’Oro. This view is up a short climb from a col where you make the decision. The alternative is a bouldery descent down to a forest area, then to Cascade des Anglais before Vizavonna. I met two of the British party again about four days after this, and they described the d’Oro descent as brutal. They were tough walkers who’d found the Cirque de la Solitude alternative quite easy. Brutal for them would have been unbearable for me. The other side of the mountain is one long boulder slope which is not my idea of fun.

This was one of the climactic moments of my GR20 trip. I’d had enough of the rough stuff on Corsica and was seeking easier delights. Monte d’Oro is visibly higher in the distance. This place was, however, a pleasant discovery sharing some of the same views.
