This lovely muted view was the end of the day, the one photographic moment after prevailing gloom. It wasn’t a good trip. I chose autumn thinking the Alps would be quieter, which they were, but it was mostly grey and drizzle.

When the sun finally emerged it was glorious. Vast alpine peaks, endless views from any high point you might reach, although the Alps are precipitous and technical. You walk mountain hillsides, such as here, gazing up to summits which must be climbed not walked.
