Background
I’ve been walking and photographing mountains for over thirty five years. Before that, as a boy, I used film cameras, a home darkroom, and modest subjects.
My favourite places are Scotland, the Lake District, Snowdonia, Peak District and the Pyrenees where I have so far undertaken six major walks, camping in the mountains. In addition to wild camping, I like camp sites and day walks.
I have a Masters degree in Photography and Postgraduate Certificate in Education. The professional teaching qualification, when I trained for the Further Education sector.
Teaching
I taught in several colleges covering all aspects of photography. My courses included film and darkroom methods, computers and digital workflow, camera use, editing, critical thinking, composition, art, and outdoor projects. A head of department, observing me, advised “you know you’re a good teacher.”
Prints
My photographs are taken with a Canon 5D and L Series lenses. For the last 10 years, a Sony A7R with Zeiss lenses. This means high quality results. I use C-Type photographic printing, the dark room technology with light sensitive paper and silver based chemistry. This is one of the most archival forms of printing; with Fuji Professional paper.
I Ching
For some years I thought about walking and the outdoors philosophically, but it’s a limited subject. There’s only so much you can say, and it’s already been said. The I Ching is a deep philosophical system. Divination and philosophy work together, as a mutually replenishing art. As Nan Shepherd said about walking in The Living Mountain “the thing to be known grows with the knowing.”
Presentation
I built my web site with WordPress using a theme and basic technical knowledge. There is a means of optimising the presentation for desktop, tablet, and phone displays. It requires some coding however, which is beyond me. The easy desktop solution, if you want the text larger, is press keyboard Ctrl then scroll up on your mouse. With phone reading the text is large and not ideal. Tablets work well, the text about right.
